History of the Eagle II
The Christen Eagle II biplane
set a new standard for kit aircraft when it was introduced at Oshkosh in 1977
by designer Frank Christensen. The kit itself was a masterpiece of engineering
and marketing, never before had sport aviation enthusiasts been offered such a
complete and well thought out kit aircraft. The Eagle II was developed
as a kit built alternative to the then in production Pitts S2A, and really
only came into being when Christen was unsuccessful in purchasing the Pitts
factory. The Eagle became a highly refined version of the S2A, and
although the external dimensions of each are very similar, they really are
very different aircraft.
The Eagle II kits were a giant
step forward in the kit aircraft world, with all subassemblies completed by
the factory, it became a giant model kit itself, all the builder had to do was
follow the 4 feet of manuals to the letter, and he would wind up with a
beautiful Christen Eagle II. The ease of construction of the aircraft is
reflected by the high completion rate of kits, a very rare occurrence in the
kit aircraft business. The majority of Eagle II`s are completed in one
of two paint schemes, either the full or tapered feather design, and although
individual colours may vary, most owners chose to match the original choices.
The colour scheme added to the overall success of the aircraft, and
became the signature of this marvelous little biplane.
